About MSST
The Massanutten Ski and Snowboard Team (MSST) is made up of two teams: the Alpine Ski Team and the Freeride Team. It is our mission to work with junior snow sports athletes to promote multiple and varied training opportunities that will improve skills and promote respect and understanding of the safety factors inherent in the sport. Through training we encourage friendships, sportsmanship, and a greater enjoyment of skiing, riding, racing and Snowsports competition. Our team consists of ski and snowboard athletes that have achieved a minimum of an advanced intermediate level of skill development and who exhibit a desire to continue to achieve and progress to higher skill levels. Athletes at this level are expected to demonstrate the highest levels of coach-ability and sportsmanship.
Alpine Ski Team
The Alpine Team consists of skiers whose focus is on skill improvement and alpine ski racing; Giant Slalom (GS) and Slalom (SL). Our Alpine competitive athletes are actively training to race in US Ski and Snowboard (USSS) competitions. These events are governed in our region by the Southern Alpine Racing Association (SARA). Our Alpine developmental athletes are actively developing their skill so as to become competitive USSS and SARA athletes.
Open to skiers ages 7-17 who can ski in control at a minimum on intermediate to advanced terrain. Coaches promote development of technical and competitive ski racing skills through a team-oriented approach. We seek to develop a life-long enjoyment for the sport of skiing and ski racing. Junior racers in a team environment will seek to improve racing abilities and progress to more expert skill and competitive levels. These athletes must also join USSS and SARA (national & regional racing associations) to race competitively in sanctioned regional racing events. Competitive Alpine Ski athletes strive to participate in SARA and USSS events held in Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia to become eligible as SARA Champions, as well as to represent in Eastern Regional competitions.

Freeride Team
FreeRide Team is open to skiers and snowboarders ages 7-17 who can navigate safely on intermediate and advanced terrain & successfully meet the additional baseline skills laid out by the freeride team’s assessment criteria. Coaches promote development of technical freestyle ski and snowboarding skills and strive to develop in athletes a lifelong enjoyment of freestyle skiing/snowboarding. Athletes actively train to compete in regional U.S. Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) events throughout the season.

Requirements For All
- All athletes, regardless of skill level, must be independent lift riders. This requires the ability to independently load and unload, raise and lower the bar, and to safely ride with team members.
- All athletes must wear a helmet at all practices and competitions.
- Freeride Team athletes are highly encouraged to become members of USASA and compete in Appalachian Series events. Athletes strive to qualify for USASA Nationals held at Copper Mountain in April each year.
- Athletes may only sign up for one of the teams offered. We are NOT offering the ability to float between teams this season.
- All athletes will begin the season with a 2-weekend skills evaluation to determine if they possess the necessary skill level for participation on the team.
- Our team consists of ski and snowboard athletes that have achieved a minimum of an advanced intermediate level of skill development and who exhibit a desire to continue to achieve and progress to higher skill levels.
Team & Practice Info
Practice Schedule
- Thursday Nights | 5 - 7 pm
Locals Cup Race League (January & February) | Open to all employees, season pass holders, and MSST Athletes - Friday Nights | 5:30 - 7:30 pm

For families that travel to sanctioned US Ski &Snowboard or USASA events in which an MSST coach is present to coach, the event will count as a practice IF / WHEN the athlete participates with the team for all inspections and coaching communications. Events in which the team has not sent a certified and MSST approved coach to represent the athlete(s) will not be credible to meet the weekly practice requirement.
Parents, our coaching staff seeks to be inclusive and to communicate fully with you and your athlete regarding their progress in setting and achieving appropriate goals for their level of skill. We are thrilled with their progress and can’t wait to share it with you. We understand the temptation to want to ski or ride along with the team during practices and events to see it for yourself. However, only trained and sanctioned ‘parent coaches’ are permitted to ski or ride with athletes during practice. This includes riding the lift. The athletes should be interacting with fellow athletes and coaches during team practices and events.
All members of the MSST are required to wear appropriate TEAM ATTIRE at all practices and team events. If an athlete is not wearing approved team outerwear (Team Jacket, Official Team Hoodie or Pullover) he or she will not be permitted at practice and will not be coached at a team event.
